Every Day is Earth Day at Sanctuary Oysters

As we take another spin around the sun and celebrate this coming Earth Day at Sanctuary Oysters, we thought what better time than now to share more on our commitment to sustainability practices. Sound environmental stewardship and curation of strong partnerships that share our ideals are at the forefront of all our endeavors.

Our oysters have consistently been recognized for their quality, freshness and flawlessly clean taste while simultaneously surpassing the most demanding international norms and standards for organic oysters. We know this is due to the environment they are grown, and the care that we take in preserving the pristine ecosystem we have been entrusted with. Along with our parent company, Sol Azul, Sanctuary Oyster’s facilities are located on the remote western coast of the Baja California Peninsula within the El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where our oysters thrive.

“Our activity naturally leads to protecting the environment. If we wish to obtain a healthy product, it has to be developed in a healthy environment. Our oysters and our facilities grow hand in hand with the protection and care of the environment.”

-       Phillippe Danigo, Founder, Sol Azul

Sustainability is not just about the land and water, it is also about cultivating partnerships and alliances with those who share our high standards in this arena. Promoting and sustaining the development of local communities including planting mangroves and actively participating in groups dedicated to thoughtful preservation of the areas we serve is a large focus of our work. We are also thrilled to work with Santa Monica Seafood and their Responsible Sourcing Vendor Program as well as their Responsible Sourcing Program designed specifically to fund environmentally responsible business who are supporting and protecting our ocean resources. Learn more about this program and where funds are being distributed here.

In an effort to leave no stone unturned in our sustainability efforts we additionally package our oysters in 100% recyclable/reusable boxes. While traditional packaging is cheaper, it always ends up in landfills as a result of the coated wax that makes them moisture resistant. Our recyclable plastic masters are not only better for the environment but leak-proof as well.

What it comes down to is that here at Sanctuary Oysters, WE CARE A LOT. While our intention to become the world’s leading sustainable oyster operation with a zero-carbon footprint may seem like a lofty goal, we gratefully accept it as our responsibility.
