Q & A with the Founder of Sanctuary Oysters, Philippe

For us, the journey to get to where Sanctuary Oysters is today has been remarkable. We operate our farm with the promise to provide our customers with some of nature's greatest creations, all while protecting and maintaining our ecosystem. Based on our founder’s French roots, our methodology is unique, yet simple. But why not hear it from Philippe, himself? Let’s dive into where Sanctuary Oysters has been, where we are and where we’re going with our founder Philippe.

What was the inspiration behind Sanctuary Oysters?

The name “sanctuary” came from the fact that our oysters are grown in a biosphere reserve, which acts as a sanctuary for pods of grey whales to mate, give birth and nurse their young. Our oyster beds are literally in a temple of nature where they can thrive in the environment they grow in. I wanted to create a farm that produces oysters people everywhere would enjoy, also while being able to protect and preserve where we operate. This is the ultimate vision behind Sanctuary Oysters and it’s what we’ll stay true to for years to come.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned over the last 20 years of producing oysters?

The biggest lesson I have learned over the last 20 years is that respect and observation of the surrounding nature are essential to how we operate as a farm and company. We wanted to grow oysters in an unpopulated area where biological wonders thrive, and it has proved to be the perfect environment to grow our company while preserving our natural environment as well.

What makes Sanctuary Oysters unique from other farms?

Sanctuary Oysters is unique from other farms due to the place where they’re grown and the passion of the people creating it. We pride ourselves on being able to grow our oysters in an environment that helps them thrive, all while following responsible practices during our day-to-day operations.

What has been the hardest obstacle Sanctuary Oysters has dealt with, and how did you overcome it?

The hardest obstacle Sanctuary Oysters faced during our beginnings was the remote location of the farm. It was quite a process to set up our farm and we overcame many challenges to establish the ideal infrastructure. Now, our location is the main asset for being far from any source of contamination. Fortunately, we have the most hardworking and passionate team and they were able to set up the process most efficiently.

Where do you see Sanctuary Oysters in 5 or 10 years?

In the future, I hope to see Sanctuary Oysters referenced in The World of Oyster Farming catalog for the exceptional quality of its products and to be known as a role model for our conscious social and ecological impact.
